Superstar Simone Biles returns to the U.S. Gymnastics Championships this week in Ft. Worth, Texas, looking to capture a historic ninth title.
It’s the next step in her quest for a third appearance at the Olympic Games.
With her 2023 win, Biles moved into sole possession of the all-time all-around title record after sitting in a tie with Alfred Jochim, whose last title came more than 90 years ago.
Joining Biles, the 2016 Olympic all-around gold medallist, in Ft. Worth will be a jam-packed field that’s set to include fellow Olympic all-around champions Suni Lee (Tokyo 2020) and Gabby Douglas (London 2012). Jade Carey, the Tokyo 2020 floor champion, gives the field a fourth Olympic champion.
Tokyo 2020 team silver medallist Jordan Chiles is also set to compete, as is two-time world all-around medallist Shilese Jones, who has cemented herself as Team USA’s No. 2 athlete behind Biles.
Other women to watch at the nationals include two-time world team gold medallists Leanne Wong, who also won all-around silver in 2021, and Skye Blakely, along with 2023 Pan Am winners Kayla DiCello and Kaliya Lincoln.
A talented field is also set for the men’s competition, including the return of Tokyo 2020 Olympian and 2022 world horizontal bar champion Brody Malone, a two-time U.S. all-around winner. Malone expects to compete in all six apparatus for the first time since a serious injury last March that required multiple surgeries and months of rehab.
All five members of the U.S. team that took bronze at the most recent World Championships are set to compete in Ft. Worth: reigning U.S. champ Asher Hong, world all-around bronze medallist Fred Richard, two-time individual world medallist Khoi Young, Tokyo 2020 Olympian Yul Moldauer, and 2022 NCAA all-around winner Paul Juda.
