400+ runners take place in 10th annual Commit to get Fit in Lewiston

This year’s Commit to Get Fit was bigger and better than ever. More than just a 5k, there was a harvest walk and an awesome kids obstacle course. Runners and their supporters looked to raise funds for the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center by getting them up and active. Both participants and organizers know how important the good work the center does is to highlight the work they’ve done for the last 20 years. “What started as something very small has become something that has had impact across both Lewiston, Auburn, to see ten community gardens across the two cities and 160 households growing food for themselves.” Nutrition Center Director, Kirsten Walter said. From their food pantry to helping establish the Lewiston farmers market, the nutrition center plays a pivotal role in educating and providing the Lewiston-Auburn area with healthy and nutritious food options. Runners may have only run 3.5 miles today, but it’s going to provide nutritious plates and full bellies for their neighbors for a long time. “If we can have kids and adults have the food that they need, then they will be able to be able to take advantage of opportunities in their lives and be able to be more successful in their own lives,” Walter said.
